The Ting Tings Ain't Freakin It

My love for television is irrefutable, and once again I must step back and admire its unceasing greatness for introducing me to the indie-pop extravaganza that is the Ting Tings. Their current hit single “Shut Up and Let Me Go” provides killer background music for yet another of Apple’s uber-trendy iPod dance-orama adverts, proving that commercializing one’s music does not always make you a sellout. And while the fact that they’ve also been featured on both One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl is, in my estimation, cringe-worthy, I am capable of sleeping at night for the sole reason that the band members (Katie White and Jules De Martino) are from Britain, and hopefully don’t know any better. Each song seems to have its own personality, an individual quirk, such as the inclusion of a slide whistle in “Fruit Machine” or the use of word repetition (such as “the drums”, as replacement for legit percussion in “Great DJ”) to play with sound. Having peppered their music with smart, snarky lyrics ripe with foreign slang and beats that really do inspire iPod accredited seizure-esque dance movement makes me not only want to get up and shake it, but also hope this rap/talk/song duo don’t shut up and go anywhere anytime soon.
