M. Ward Smooth As a Whistle

With an abbreviated name like M. Ward, you might assume he’s trying to spare the masses another wacky ethnic conception (Mustafa, Malakian, Mazerati). Actually, it stands for Matt, which makes him 10% cooler, even before you hear his music. M. Ward is the indie prince of the south. With sandpaper vocals and an impressive repertoire of bluesy/slide guitar riffs, Ward’s songs sound distinctly Southern, yet still retain that indie edge through his raw/clever songwriting. He’s kind of like a cooler, more interesting, southern gentleman-like version of Sufjan Stevens. Ward is also the Him in “She and Him,” his folky collaboration with actress Zooey Deschanel. Lucky him. And thats S. Phili to you.
